Ne tarjosivat jo varhain oivan kulkuv\u00e4yl\u00e4st\u00f6n ihmisten, raaka-aineidenkin ja valmiiden tuotteiden kuljettamiseen. H\u00f6yrylaivaliikenne P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteell\u00e4 alkoi jo 1850-luvun tiet\u00e4miss\u00e4 ja Keiteleell\u00e4 noin 20-vuotta my\u00f6hemmin hinaaja- ja matkustajaliikenteen\u00e4. Vesist\u00f6jen merkitys kulkuv\u00e4ylin\u00e4 korostui entisest\u00e4\u00e4nkin 1900-luvun alun teollisessa laajenemisessa Keiteleen etel\u00e4p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4. J\u00e4rviliikenteeseen tarvittiin lis\u00e4\u00e4 uittotoiminnassa ja matkustajaliikenteess\u00e4 toimivia h\u00f6yrylaivoja. Niiden lis\u00e4ksi alueen vesireittej\u00e4 ja koskialueita oli kunnostettava uittoon ja laivaliikenteeseen paremmin sopiviksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orastavat uittotoiminnan haasteita<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vesiliikenteen ja varsinkin uittotoiminnan laajentuminen lis\u00e4si ristiriitoja muiden vesien- ja rannank\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien ja -omistajien kanssa. Asutuksen tihentyess\u00e4 alkoi jokivarsilla olla yh\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n my\u00f6s muita intressinomistajia, joiden edut t\u00f6rm\u00e4siv\u00e4t teollisuuden etuihin kuin tukit lohipatoihin. Erityisen nurjamielisesti suuruittoon suhtautuivat kalastajat. He olivat huolissaan siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kalat kielt\u00e4ytyisiv\u00e4t uimasta samoissa vesiss\u00e4 tukkien kanssa ja ett\u00e4 tukkien kuoret likaisivat ja muuttaisivat vedet sek\u00e4 lopulta mataloittaisivat ne kaloille ja kalastukselle kelpaamattomiksi. Kalastus olikin pitk\u00e4\u00e4n niskan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 jokiv\u00e4ylien k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kiistoissa. Uittoa rajoitti erityisesti pohjoisessa, mutta my\u00f6s muilla t\u00e4rkeill\u00e4 uittoalueilla jokien kulku-uomat l\u00e4hes kokonaan katkaisemat pyyntilaitteet. Niiden aiheuttamista vaikeuksista vapauduttiin ensin rahan avulla ja my\u00f6hemmin vesilains\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4nn\u00f6n my\u00f6t\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viitasaaren reitti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viitasaaren reitin alkul\u00e4hteet ovat Pihtiputaan, Reisj\u00e4rven, Haapaj\u00e4rven ja Pyh\u00e4j\u00e4rven rajamaisemissa. Ylimp\u00e4n\u00e4 reitin vesist\u00e4 on pitk\u00e4muotoinen Muurasj\u00e4rvi, josta vesi juoksee v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4 Autionjokea my\u00f6ten Alvaj\u00e4rveen, jonka vedet laskevat Hein\u00e4jokea Kolimaan. Kolimasta vesi purkautuu alkuosaltaan kaksihaaraista K\u00e4rn\u00e4-Kym\u00f6nkosken kuohuisaa koskireitti\u00e4 Yl\u00e4-Keiteleeseen. Koskireitin pituus on puolitoista peninkulmaa. Putousta siin\u00e4 on noin yhdeks\u00e4n metri\u00e4, josta K\u00e4rn\u00e4nkosken osalle tulee 4,5 metri\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viitasaaren reittiin kuuluva Kivij\u00e4rven reitti saa alkunsa Suomensel\u00e4ll\u00e4 olevista j\u00e4rvist\u00e4, lammista ja laajoilta soilta. Reitin keskij\u00e4rveen, Kivij\u00e4rveen, laskee vesijaksoja l\u00e4hes joka ilmansuunnalta. Kivij\u00e4rven kirkonkyl\u00e4 on j\u00e4rven l\u00e4nsirannalla, Kinnula j\u00e4rven pohjoisp\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4hell\u00e4 ja Kannonkoski j\u00e4rven etel\u00e4p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4. Kivij\u00e4rven etel\u00e4osasta vesi virtaa useiden j\u00e4rvien, jokien ja koskien kautta Vuosj\u00e4rveen. Suurimmat koskista ovat Potmonkoski ja Hilmonkoski. Vuosj\u00e4rvi laskee Huopanankosken kautta Muuruej\u00e4rveen sek\u00e4 sielt\u00e4 edelleen Keih\u00e4rinkoskesta Yl\u00e4-Keiteleeseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keitele on 85 kilometrin pituinen Viitasaaren reitin keskusj\u00e4rvi ja P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteen j\u00e4lkeen koko Kymijoen vesist\u00f6n suurin j\u00e4rvi. Yl\u00e4-Keiteleen ja samalla koko j\u00e4rven luoteisin k\u00e4rki on nimelt\u00e4\u00e4n Turunpohja, joka tunnetaan paremmin nimell\u00e4 Keitelepohja. Yl\u00e4-Keiteleen aavoin vesi on Viitasaaren kirkonkyl\u00e4n luoteispuolinen Pihkurinselk\u00e4. Yl\u00e4-Keiteleen vedet ovat yhteydess\u00e4 Keiteleen Kym\u00f6nselk\u00e4\u00e4n H\u00e4nnil\u00e4nsalmen, Haapa- eli Kirkkosalmen ja Miekkasalmen kautta. Pihtiputaan vedet laskevat id\u00e4st\u00e4 Kym\u00f6nselk\u00e4\u00e4n. Viitasaaren kirkko sijaitsee Kirkkosalmen ja Miekkasalmen v\u00e4liss\u00e4. Kirkonkyl\u00e4n etel\u00e4puolella on Suovanselk\u00e4, josta p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n Kokonsel\u00e4lle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen alapuolelta alkaa Keski-Keiteleen vesialue, jossa on useita luoteeseen pist\u00e4vi\u00e4 lahtia. T\u00e4rke\u00e4 vesialue on kaakkoon suuntautuva Kuhjonlahti. Sen keskell\u00e4 on suuri P\u00e4ng\u00e4tsalon saari. Kuhjonlahden etel\u00e4osa on kanavien kautta yhteydess\u00e4 Rautalammin reitin vesiin. Keski-Keiteleen vedet johtuvat Iitsalonsaaren kahta puolta Kertonselk\u00e4\u00e4n. Sen koillispuolella on Patasalon saari ja l\u00e4nsipuolella Konginkankaan iso Riihiniemi. Konginkangas on vesien keskell\u00e4. Sen maarannat ovat repaleiset, samoin kuin koko Ala-Keiteleen rannikko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matilanvirrasta alkava Ala-Keiteleen vesijakso on t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 saaria ja kapeikkoja. Monet isot saaret t\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t kaakkoon Sumiaisten kirkonkyl\u00e4\u00e4n pist\u00e4v\u00e4n Kier\u00e4nlahden. Suolahti on Keiteleen etel\u00e4isin kohta. Keitele laskee lounaiskulmastaan etel\u00e4\u00e4n kahdesta eri paikasta: ylemp\u00e4n\u00e4 l\u00e4nness\u00e4 olevasta M\u00e4mmenkoskesta ja hieman alempana \u00c4\u00e4nekoskesta. Molemmissa putous on seitsem\u00e4n metri\u00e4 ja molemmat kosket laskevat kapeaan ja korkearantaiseen Kuhnamo-j\u00e4rveen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saarij\u00e4rven reitti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kuhnamo-j\u00e4rvess\u00e4 yhtyy Viitasaaren reittiin Saarij\u00e4rven reitti, joka on l\u00e4ntisin Kymijoen latvareiteist\u00e4. Sille ominainen on pitk\u00e4, l\u00e4hes yht\u00e4jaksoinen koskireitti. Siin\u00e4 on kaikkiaan 22 koskea, joiden korkeusero on yhteens\u00e4 42 m. Koskireitin pituus on 84 kilometri\u00e4. Vesist\u00f6n pohjoisin haara alkaa Perhon rajoilta Kotij\u00e4rvest\u00e4 ja laskee pienvesien kautta Kyyj\u00e4rven pohjoisp\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n. Kyyj\u00e4rvi laskee edelleen P\u00e4\u00e4j\u00e4rveen, jonka it\u00e4rannalla sijaitsee Karstula. P\u00e4\u00e4j\u00e4rvi laskee eritt\u00e4in mutkittelevaa ja koskirikasta vesijaksoa my\u00f6ten Summasj\u00e4rveen. Matkalle on kasautunut 14 koskea, joista suurimmat ovat Vaajakoski sek\u00e4 Leuhunkoski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Koskireitin suurimmat j\u00e4rvet ovat Kalmarinj\u00e4rvi, Mahlunj\u00e4rvi ja Saarij\u00e4rvi. Viime mainittu laskee Kallinj\u00e4rven ja Majakosken kautta Summasj\u00e4rveen eli Summaseen. Summasj\u00e4rven vesi solisee Summaskosken kautta kapeaa vesijuoksua pitkin Kiimasj\u00e4rveen. T\u00e4m\u00e4 vesi laskee \u00c4\u00e4nekosken Kuhnamoj\u00e4rveen. Saarij\u00e4rven it\u00e4puolella sijaitseva Pyh\u00e4j\u00e4rvi on yksi maamme kahdeksasta isoimmasta Pyh\u00e4j\u00e4rvi-nimisest\u00e4 vedest\u00e4. Pyh\u00e4j\u00e4rven vedet virtaavat Kiimasj\u00e4rveen. Kuhnamossa yhtyv\u00e4t Saarij\u00e4rven ja Viitasaaren reitit jatkavat kapeaa vesiuomaa Kapeenkosken kautta Vatianj\u00e4rveen. Se laskee Kuusaankosken kautta kaakkoon Saraveden Torronsel\u00e4lle. Saravesi kuuluu suurelta osin Laukaaseen, jonka keskus on sen l\u00e4nsirannalla. Kaakossa j\u00e4rveen yhtyy Liesunsalmen kautta Kuusvedelt\u00e4 tuleva Rautalammin reitti. Saravedest\u00e4 vedet jatkavat Kuhankosken kautta Lepp\u00e4veteen, joka on P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteen koillispuolella. Lepp\u00e4veden etel\u00e4p\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4heisyydess\u00e4 on Toivakka. Lepp\u00e4vesi purkaa vetens\u00e4 Haapa- eli Vaajakosken kautta P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteeseen, Kymijoen vesist\u00f6n keskusj\u00e4rveen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteen latvavedet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alla olevassa kuvassa on esitetty P\u00e4ij\u00e4nteen latvavesien rakennetta. Ympyr\u00e4ss\u00e4 olevat luvut kuvaavat j\u00e4rvien pinta-alaa km<sup>2<\/sup>.
